CABB: Rhapsody in Blue
23 May, 2013
The Callum Au Big Band has just started rehearsals for a new large scale project based on Gershwin’s masterwork “Rhapsody in Blue”. Callum has arranged Gershwin’s piece for the band, making reference to the trad jazz styles which were in fashion when it was first performed in 1924 with Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra. The whole band plays without amplification of any sort in order to achieve the right type of sound quality.
Each main theme pays homage to a different early big band or jazz artist – from start to finish, Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra, Louis Armstrong’s Hot 7, Harry James, Tadd Dameron, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and finally Gershwin himself.
You can listen to a rough audio sample of the first rehearsal below.
This new project will be premiered at Boisdale, Canary Wharf, on 27/07/2013, with Chris Eldred as the piano soloist and Simon Marsh as the clarinet soloist. Tickets can be purchased here.
